What It Really Takes to Start a Supplement Company

Starting a supplement company sounds easy.

Come up with a cool name.

Make a logo.

Put some gummies in a bag.

Wait for the money to roll in.

Right?

Absolutely not.

The pretty packaging is the last part of the story.

Behind every little gummy is a surprisingly complicated journey involving ingredients, formulation, manufacturing, testing, regulations, packaging, logistics, websites, customer service, and a frankly unreasonable number of spreadsheets.

First, you need an idea

Every supplement company starts with a problem.

For BIPZ, the idea was simple:

What if there were a supplement designed to be part of the ritual before drinking—not something you desperately reach for the next morning? What if we could make better mornings after drinking for people?

That sounds straightforward.

Then you start researching.

And researching.

And researching some more.

Then comes formulation

This is where things get real.

You can't just throw a handful of trendy ingredients into a gummy and call it a day. You have to think about ingredient forms, dosages, stability, taste, texture, manufacturing limitations, interactions, serving size, sourcing and more.

BIPZ's formulation incorporates ingredients including DHM, prickly pear extract, and schisandra, which have become increasingly interesting in the world of alcohol-adjacent wellness. But there's an important distinction between an ingredient being interesting and an ingredient being proven to deliver a particular outcome. Since there's a lack of clinical trials, we relied on naturopath real-world knowledge and expertise to determine which ingredients would speak best to those pesky bummers of alcohol.

Then comes manufacturing

Once you've settled on a formula, somebody has to actually make it.

And they have to make it consistently.

That means working with manufacturers, establishing specifications, testing ingredients and finished products, managing quality systems, and making sure the product is manufactured according to applicable requirements.

The FDA does not pre-approve most dietary supplements before they hit the market. Instead, manufacturers and distributors are responsible for ensuring their products are safe, properly labeled and compliant.

That responsibility is a big deal. That's why we test BIPZ for safety and authenticity using a third party. It's an added expense for sure, since we have so many active ingredients (we're charged each one) but it felt like a necessity for us.

Then comes the label

Ever wonder why supplement labels look so specific?

There's a reason. Supplement labels generally need information such as the product identity, net quantity, Supplement Facts panel, ingredient information and manufacturer/distributor information, and there are size and location requirements, too!

I had a hell of a time fitting it all onto my BIPZ pre-alcohol gummies convenient single-serve packs. I wanted to say so much more, but I literally couldn't.

Speaking of, some things I wanted to say, I wasn't allowed to. And I'm scared someone will take something the wrong way. See something, say something, ok? I want to be as honest as possible and provide people with a great product, too. I'm just a woman with a dream, afterall.

Actually have to sell it, too

Congratulations.

You've formulated the product.

You've manufactured it.

You've tested it.

You've packaged it.

Now you need people to care.

That's where branding comes in.

For BIPZ, the goal isn't to look like another bottle of vitamins sitting quietly in the medicine cabinet.

It's meant to fit into the culture of going out.

Concerts.

Dinner.

Travel.

Weekends.

Friends.

Music.

Drinks.

And the little rituals that happen before the night actually starts.

That's why BIPZ comes in a gummy format designed to be taken before alcohol.

Not just about a Gummy

It's about building trust around a gummy.

That means respecting the science.

Being transparent about what's known...and what's still being researched.

Building a product people actually want to take.

And creating a brand that belongs in people's real lives.

The gummy might be small.

The hearts behind it?

Not so much.

That's the real story behind BIPZ.

Our founder, Ashley, started a craft spirits brand in Colorado. She loves how alcohol brings people together, but hates the effect of drinking on her body. So, she teamed up with a lab to build something better: a gummy formulated with DHM, B vitamins, and botanicals designed to support liver function and help your body process your favorite drinks. Created by someone who drinks like you. Backed by someone who knows the science.
